For the past two years, here's what "checking your AI visibility" looked like at every marketing agency in America, including mine.
Open ChatGPT. Type in a question a customer might ask. See if your client shows up. Rephrase and try again. Repeat on Gemini and Perplexity. Screenshot everything. Guess about why.

Trial and error. We were doing it, our competitors were doing it, and anyone who claims they had it more figured out than that is polishing the truth. The demand was real because “how do we get found in AI?” became the number one question clients asked us. But the tooling didn’t exist. We were all building our own systems out of prompts and hunches.
That era just ended, and I want to explain why it matters even if you never buy anything from anyone.
We're beta testing a tool called Scout, built by Yext.
The partner history matters to me here. We’ve used Yext for over ten years, so when they put structure around a problem we’d been attacking with duct tape, I paid attention.
What Scout does is give a business a visibility score. One number that reflects how visible you are across the major AI engines and traditional Google search, benchmarked against your local competitors. It then diagnoses why you’re winning or losing in specific places and prescribes the specific tasks to fix it.
Measure, diagnose, then prescribe. If that sounds like a doctor’s visit, that’s the point. Marketing for the AI era was stuck at “you seem sick.”
Why do I care so much about a score? Because a score is something a client and I can look at together. Here’s where you were in June. Here’s where you are in September. Here’s what we did in between. For fifteen years, the clients who stayed with us longest were the ones we could show that kind of before-and-after. A score turns AI search from a hand-wavy conversation into that kind of relationship.
But I want to be careful here, because scores can become a trap in themselves.
A visibility score is an input. It is not the outcome. The outcome is what people actually do once they find you. Are you getting more phone calls? More form submissions? Are more appointments getting booked? That’s the bottom of the funnel, and it’s the only part that pays your bills. If the score climbs and the leads don’t follow, the work isn’t finished. Any agency that celebrates a visibility number without connecting it to lead flow is handing you a vanity metric with extra steps.
Honest report from inside the beta: no shocking discoveries yet.
What we’ve gained so far is structure. A consistent way to measure, a consistent way to diagnose, and a prioritized list of what to do about it. In a category that was pure guesswork six months ago, structure is the breakthrough.
The businesses that get measured first get improved first. Everyone else is still guessing.
