There's a capability in local advertising right now that most business owners have never heard of, and when I explain it, the reaction is always the same. First disbelief, then a long pause, then "wait, can we do that to my competitor?"

Here’s how a customer actually finds a business today. They ask an AI tool for options and get a handful of names. Then they verify. They Google those names. They read the reviews. They check that the website looks legit and the business looks active. Then they call.
AI opens the door. Everything else you’ve built either walks them through it or turns them away.
So play it out. You pull out of Google while that’s still the norm. The AI recommends you, the customer goes to check you out, and there’s not much there. Weak ad presence, thin reviews, stale results. You paid to get surfaced, then lost the customer at the exact step you defunded.
There’s a simpler reason not to bail, too. Google is still enormous, and they are not handing over their ad business without a fight. They’re rebuilding everything around AI as fast as anyone. A huge share of buying decisions still get finalized on Google, even when they started somewhere else. Walk away a year early and you’re handing that ground to whoever stayed.
One more thing before anyone gets excited about clean answers. I was in a client’s Analytics last week. Their customers keep telling them they found the business through “Google or web search.” The actual data barely backs that up. Attribution was already messy before AI showed up. Now a customer hears about you from ChatGPT, verifies you on Google, and calls from your website. Which channel gets credit? Wrong question. The system gets credit.
Here’s why that precision changes the math. A zip code is thirty thousand people, most of whom will never buy what you sell. Three feet is a doorway. When you can build an audience out of doorways, your ad budget stops paying to reach strangers and starts paying to reach evidence.
Think about what counts as evidence. Everyone who visited your competitor’s showroom in the last 90 days is in the market for what you sell. Everyone who attended the three-day home show self-identified as your audience by walking in. Every household on the street where you just finished a job watched your trucks come and go for two weeks. These aren’t demographics. Their behaviors, and behavior beats demographics every time someone actually has to buy something.
Then there’s the timing reason this matters now. The cookie, the tracking technology on which digital advertising has been built for 15 years, is being phased out. A lot of ad targeting is quietly getting worse while costing the same. Location-based targeting doesn’t care, because it’s built on where people physically go, not what they click. It’s not a workaround for the old system. It’s what comes after it.
And once the audience exists, it works everywhere. The same location-built audience feeds display ads, streaming video ads, and Meta ads simultaneously. One audience, every channel, frequency compounding across all of them.
The businesses that get this first won't talk about it much. Ask me how I know.
